The roots of the Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab trace back to 2005, when Dr. Fritz and Ping Faulhaber identified a critical need to transform science education. Recognizing the limitations of traditional textbooks and lectures, they launched the Science Lending Library. In collaboration with forward-thinking educators across Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Sarasota County School Districts, this initiative provided free, standards-based science kits for classrooms, fostering hands-on learning experiences.
The success of the Science Lending Library was immediate. Initially operating from the family business’s warehouse, the program soon found a home at Tampa’s renowned Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). Propelled by this success, the Faulhabers next envisioned a space that pushed the boundaries of conventional learning—a hub of innovation. Thus, the Faulhaber Fab Lab emerged with the goal of offering cutting-edge equipment to the community, including 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and CNC routers, enabling anyone to turn their ideas into reality.
In 2014, the Faulhaber Fab Lab and the Science Lending Library seamlessly merged, giving rise to the Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab, affectionately known as the “Fab Lab.” Today, the organization remains committed to its cornerstone Lending Library program. Additionally, it provides memberships, innovative programs, camps, classes, and numerous volunteer opportunities for both youth and adults. Emphasizing experiential learning, the Fab Lab empowers individuals of all ages to bring their dreams to life.
Visitors and new members often express awe at the limitless possibilities and FABulous opportunities within the center.
